Examining the Role of Measures in Life and Its Impact
You surely agree that we live in an orderly world, but the problem here is that we are often accustomed to accepting the appearance of things we see. In fact, the precise order that exists in the world is evidence for more precise measures behind phenomena. Perhaps talking about measures has unconsciously takes your mind to an image of physics or chemistry laboratories, without knowing that measures have surrounded us both externally and internally. The role of measures in life is undeniable, from the carefully designed flower petals to the frequency of sound we hear, the tide of oceans, the arrangement of stars, or any phenomena that somehow affect our lives, all are dependent on measures. In fact, all the manifestations of God, from material things and solids to immaterial phenomena, all are made and operate based on precise mathematical laws which. In short, this world is the world of measures.
But unfortunately, the veil of habit prevents us from looking around us with a questioning point of view and being amazed by the wonders of different phenomena. Have you ever thought about the exact distance between the sun and the moon from the earth? Imagine if the sun was slightly closer or further away, the intensity of heat would probably cause tree leaves to burn, we would have no food to survive, and we would suffer from various skin diseases and cancers. On the other hand, if it were too cold, human life might not exist on earth.
Now imagine if the moon, with its size and magnitude, were closer to the earth. In this case, the moon’s gravitational pull would cause the oceans to bulge out, and dry lands would submerge underwater, practically leaving no place for life. These are just small examples of the role of measures in life, like thousands of other blessings that we overlook.
If we come a little closer and take a look at measures within ourselves, we will see how hormones and various elements that are responsible for regulating our lives are dependent on measures. If these hormones increase or decrease slightly, they will make us swing between insomnia and excessive sleepiness, depression and happiness, and thousands of other emotional and physical imbalances. As for elements, our muscle movements, the release of energy in our bodies, and the strength and weakness of our bones depend on their precise measure and quantity. These measures or amounts are so precise and complicated that the smallest scales are used to measure them.
The Scope of the Effects of Measures
Sometimes, some unusual conditions and the disruption of normal measures draw our attention to the role of measures in life. Fo instance, we may see individuals who suffer from excessive smallness or largeness of a body organ and cannot easily use the common facilities that are available to everyone. In fact, what causes this distressing difference from other people is the very low or very high release of growth hormones during childhood or adolescence. To give another example, even an extra chromosome or a part of it in the last pair of our body’s chromosomes causes the most common genetic disorder, known as Down syndrome. Even thinking about this complexity and precision in the role of measures in life can be astonishing, and at the same time, disturbing. That is because we see ourselves incapable of controlling the world with such levels of precision and grandeur.
However, the scope of measures is not limited to material and tangible things. It is not surprising to know that thinking and reasoning, which are considered, besides deep knowledge, as factors for our happiness in this world and the hereafter, are also influenced by these same measures. In fact, our intellect functions properly when it correctly identifies measures and limits, prioritizes them, and ultimately chooses the more important limits.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
We must adhere to measures. If the role of measures in life was insignificant, we would be faced with a world full of chaos and disorder. An outstanding example in this regard is related to the levels of our soul. If we want to achieve balance in all levels of our existence, we must educate the lower existential dimensions of our soul to know their limits and measures and respect the boundaries of the higher dimensions. When we indulge excessively in the lower parts, they become demanding and do not give any opportunity to our supra-rational dimension, like a child whose parents have been so obedient to his commands that he now rules over them.
Undoubtedly, the lower parts of our soul also need nourishment, provided that they know their due measures and do not exceed their limits. But how can we make the lower parts of our existence aware of these measures and limits? We will provide more explanations on this matter in future lessons. In fact, the more we feed the human dimension of our existence, the less influence and control our lower dimensions will exert, making us more receptive to justice. In such conditions, our soul becomes more obedient to our supra-rational faculty.
But most importantly, we must set our own limits and measures. By becoming aware of our own worth as a human being, we set our value and capacity accordingly. This capacity is so great that it can contain infinity. In fact, if we ignore the role of measures in life, or more importantly, if we fail to understand our own limits and measures, our desires will no longer be in line with our human dimension, but rather they will be as limited as our physical aspect and the lower dimensions of our being.
In this article, we discussed the role of measures in life and the structure of this world. We gave examples of the importance of measures in different phenomena and within ourselves. We stated that the veil of habit prevents us from seeing the wonders around us, so sometimes some unusual events happen at God’s will to make us aware of this order and the set limits. We touched upon the importance of sticking to measures in the levels of our soul. In the end, we mentioned that unless we know our own limits and measures, our desires will not be compatible with our human dimension.
